Confusion Among The Accessories, Diabetes Style ~

Claw clips are to be worn on your head, not your hip~

So, yesterday I had to be out the door somewhat early. Not crack of dawn early mind you, but early. And it was 25 degrees out, and my bed was warm and toasty so I hit the snooze button several times. Did I mention it was cold out??

Anyway, I got out of bed, took my blood sugar (102,) made some coffee (The Trader Joe’s Gingerbread Coffee is almost gone and I was none too happy about that,) bolused fo said coffee and blueberry greek yogurt, disconnected my insulin pump, jumped into the shower, washed up, & continued to get all Kellyfied for work.

Before I left my home base, I quickly went to grab my insulin pump & clip it back onto my trousers, which also happened to be the same exact moment I'd come to the realization that I should also grab the little black hair claw hair clip on my dresser. Because quite frankly, all signs pointed to a bad hair day and who the hell needs to deal with that. I'd just wear my hair down on the way to work because it's actually warmer (I kid you not, wearing your hair down IS warmer,) and then clip it back lightening quick into a nice chignon (fancy word for bun) when I arrived at work.

Cut to around 1ish when I went to go pee. Which is precisely when I realized that I didn’t have any tubing anywhere in the vicinity of my trousers. And then I sort of quietly freaked out right there on the john.

And the conversation between me and my brain went something like this: Where the hell’s my pump and why the hell didn’t I notice this earlier, because this is like the second time I’ve peed since I got here??? Did I leave my pump at home? God, I hope I left my pump at home. Did I leave it at Starbucks? No dummy, you didn't even bolus for your coffee at Starbucks because you thought your breakfast bolus would cover it. You're just batting a thousand this morning, Einstein!!!

And then I snapped out of it, grabbed the right side of my belt and felt around where the pump would have clipped...... And realized that something was indeed clipped there, except it wasn’t my pump. It was that little black claw hair clip.

Yes, yours truly had somehow got her accessories signals crossed regarding the hair clip and clipping on my insulin pump.

And I was very relieved that I hadn't lost my insulin pump, but I was incredibly mortified that:

  1. I left my pump at home (this has happened to me a lot as of late, and I'm not sure why)
  2. I knew my blood sugar was heading towards Canada and that's always a bummer
  3. I’d been walking around with my hair down on what was indeed a bad hair day.

And then I laughed out loud because let’s face it, it was funny and the situation could have been so much worse.

So I went home at lunch and retrieved my 8 year old pump, did a correction bolus for my now 260 blood sugar, grabbed a bottle of water and went back to work. And still somehow managed to never deal with my bad hair day. But my blood sugar went back to normal faster than usual and was finally able to eat lunch around around 3 p.m.

Plus, I got a blog post out of it....So... Ya, I got that going for me ~

I have done that before too! What I do now is actually leave my pump on if I take a morning shower. Otherwise I can forget it since my brain really isn't "on" yet in the morning. Glad to know I'm not the only one that does this!

Well hey, at least you didn't find your pump wrapped up in your hair bun!!

Wow...I'm amazed that your BS level recovered so quickly! And what's even better is getting a blog post out of it. I've worn a pump for 23 years now and I don't remember ever leaving it off. Sometimes it feels like it's an appendage...kind of like how my son's iPhone is attached to him. =)

Like Karen G, I had a vision of you with your tubing holding up the hair.
I left my pump at home once, so far. I'm perfectly capable of doing it again, I'm sure.

I came home from the hospital, jumped in the shower & got dressed for Simonpalooza. We arrived at the airport and someone asked about my pump. I reached to show it to them and . . . Oh no, OMG . . Where's my pump?!
I was so grateful Kim (txtingmypancreas) had a Humulog pen and shared it with me. It was horrifying at the time, but, pretty funny now!

This is SO my life. Like my pump sliding off my waistband and into the toilet. Or the time I went on a cruise and forgot my pump supplies. (They have a hospital on Grand Cayman- there were chickens outside in the courtyard.)Or the time when my pump and my linked meter broke in the same week (Actually, that was over Christmas break while traveling.)
