Hey, Discovery Channel - How About A Show Called: Diabetes MythBusters? Or Maybe: I Am My Own Pancreas?

I'm a big fan of the Discovery Channel and I always find myself watching shows like "Cash Cab," which I SO want to be on."Ghost Lab," which I will totally deny watching in the company of certain people who shall remain nameless, and "Dirty Jobs," which totally freaks me out on all types of levels.

But because I'm kind of weird, I also play around with the titles of certain shows and give them a diabetes spin.

For instance, I love "
MythBusters!" Seriously, Adam, Jaime & the rest of their crackerjack team of smart, funny, and Wile E. Coyote type of brilliant, who blow the lid of all types of myths, legend, & old wives tales.

And I always find myself learning about interesting urban myths like:

Will your stomach REALLY explode if you combine Diet Coke & mentos?
Well, according to the Mythbusters team, the answer is a resounding NO! Because, and I quote, "when you open and drink a Diet Coke, it releases much of the pressurized carbon dioxide that forms the carbonation. As the soda warms while traveling to the stomach, the gas continues to vaporize. Any remaining might cause your stomach to expand, but it isn't enough to spark a dangerous gassy rebellion if you chase the soda with a pack of Mentos." Hmmm, good to know~

Or, can a person use salami as rocket fuel?
Surprisingly, YES, a person can use salami as rocket feul because salami is rich with nitrates - a key ingredient in rocket fuel.

And does vodka & Cinnamon really get rid of bad breath? Turns out the russian grandmas were right, It sure does!

But what if my boys from Mythbusters had a show totally devoted called: Diabetes MythBusting?
Can you imagine Jaimie & Adam consuming massive amounts of sugar in order to "catch" diabetes and then ingesting copious amounts of Cinnamon to see if they could actually cure diabetes? Right there they'd be busting two UBER diabetes myths!

I wonder what would happen if they put clinatest tablets in a two liter bottle of diet coke? Would it cause the bottles to explode and would the liquid be blue like the negative urine readings from long ago?

Personally, I wouldn't want to be part of the sweet water test, . A.K.A., the urine taste test. Seriously, back in the old days doctors tasted urine to see if it was sweet, which was how they diagnosed diabetes. YUCK and no thank-you! While this is a true diabetes fact, they can totally skip the reenactment!

Imagine the Mythbusters team interviewing diabetes research scientists; endocrinologists & CDEs and having them tell the public that insulin does not = the bad kind of diabetes. BIG FAT DIABETES MYTH DESTROYED!
And that's just the tip of the diabetes mythbusting iceberg - there's plenty more where those came from!

I'm ready to put on my producing/research hat for this show, so give me a call Jaimie & Adam!

Seriously, I have experience in both producing and production management, not to mention the whole diabetes and diabetes myth busting thing - which is where my skills really sparkle!

What diabetes myths would you like the Mythbusters to bust?

Another show on Discovery got the old diabetes wheels turning! Recently,I watched a special on Discovery called: I Am My Own Twin, about people who are Chimeras. Basically, Chimeras are people with two distinct and different DNA cells. This happens when two fertilized eggs fuse together & become one. This creates all sorts of issues like a persons organs having a different set of chromosomes then their blood.

The special was interesting and I certainly learned more than a thing or two regarding the worldful word of DNA. But in the back of my mind I kept thinking that Discovery outta have a show called: I Am My Own Pancreas.

And they could interview people with diabetes ( or I could host it, what ev) who wear insulin pumps or take MDI shots and how they really have TO BE their own pancreas, because their pancreases don't work. Being A pancreas is 247, 365 days a year and we never get a brake. People need to know the diabetes facts AND MYTHS - And lets face it, like it our not, our demographics are growing & people need to be educated!

  7. This would be a great show - especially because some people are swearing that "ABC" is definitely true, while others scream back "ABC" is without any doubt false!!

Maybe Halle Berry could make a cameo appearance on D Myth Busters? right after Dr. Oz?!?! :)

(~dislike and yuck to drinking sweet pee)

  8. MYTH: insulin only makes you fat! That one drives me nuts, because at the right time insulin can help you become stronger, help you feel energized, help you repair and rebuild muscle, help your body use fat for fuel instead of using sugar in the muscles. Yada yada yada.

  9. I would SO watch that show. Then I would force everyone I know to watch it. It should air during the commercials of the Super Bowl! And if you dare change the channel....? Drinking pee. That's your punishment. And that is possibly the nastiest thing I've ever heard! I wonder how many doctors faked a diagnosis???

  10. YES! Such awesome ideas! My kid had a Mythbusters bday party a couple years back, and she dressed up as Kari and I dressed up as Adam and my husband dressed up as Jamie. We did the mentos + coke thing in the backyard and all the kids loved it.

Now that Diabetes has entered our lives, I heartily endorse your idea!!

  11. YES!!!! I'm TOtally in!!!! We should be the researchers since we're all inundated with these myths daily! Yesterday, I got an ice cream cone during a low. The guy making it made the thing GIGANTIC and someone in line called it "the diabetic size." When TV doctors say crap like "you're one candy bar away from diabetes" that's the kind of nonsense we're subjected to. These myths are only encouraged within in the media and they seriously need to be BUSTED. I doubt anyone will accept the truth until it comes directly from Jamie, Adam, Kari, Grant, and Tory.

  12. Great idea :)

Diabetes Myths... here are two UK ones that really need debunking:

The 'heart healthy' high starchy carb diet advocated for T2 diabetics. [Some T2s actually add lots of carbs IN to their diet after DX following their doctor's advice. The very carbs their bodies struggle to process!]

T2 diabetics do not need to test their BGs. [Nonsense! How can you tell how much of what you can eat if you can't see the effect of food s on your blood sugars]
