My Internal Diabetes Clock has been all sorts of wacky the past few weeks.
Two weeks back my daily insulin intake was in the mid twenties and I was hardly bolusing for meals - It was almost as if my pancreas was spitting out insulin, which of course it wasn't, but it sure seemed that way. And while I was in California my numbers were surprisingly good, except for a nasty early morning high at the Philadelphia airport that took the whole 6 hour flight to LAX to get back normal and a middle of the night low at the hotel on Saturday night/Sunday morning that had me talking in my sleep - but that's for another post.
And these past 5 days, (and always between the hours of 2 and 3 a.m.,) my IDC (Internal Diabetes Clock) has been waking me up with that weird low feeling. You know the feeling, where you get woken up from what you thought was a deep REM sleep and feel all types of tingly and shaky and spaghetti limbed and you know your numbers are heading south faster than a rumor spreads on the internetz!
So I'd flip on my nightstand light (which was shining incredibly bright,) to test and confirm that I was indeed low, except for the times I'd immediately reach for the glucose tabs and treat.
I'd pop glucose tabs and then stumble to the kitchen for a small glass of juice, (guess who ran out of juiceboxes for her nightstand stash?) and then wait impatiently for my numbers to start pointing north so I could finally turn off the light and get some much needed sleep.
6:30 a.m. came all to early and I'd wake up bleary eyed and in the high 190's.
One night of the above I could deal with; two nights in a row I considered coincidence, three nights in a row and I seriously began to wonder what the hell was going on with my Internal Diabetes Clock!
So on Saturday (night #4) I decreased my 12 a.m. - 5a.m. basal down to 0.95 units and still woke up low at 2:30 in the morning at 66.
Last night I decreased said basal rate to 0.90 units and slept through the night, but woke up this morning at 6:30 and with a blood sugar of 72.
So I guess I'm getting there. Tonight I'll decrease the 12 a.m. basal rate yet again to 0.85 units and see what happens.
But I have a sneaking suspicion that once I go ahead and get this Internal Diabetes Clock idiosyncrasy figured out, my IDC will reset itself again - Just for shits and giggles~
Those internal clocks are crazy... and I think they mock us. Mine ALWAYS get wacky when traveling, and that's what happened in California. Even temp basals sometimes aren't enough. Can be frustrating, and per usual as soon as we get it figured out something changes again. Hope it balances out soon, Kelly!
