I Played Blood Sugar/Bolus Roulette & LOST

Today's post is late & not the one I'd originally intended to put up- for two stupid/simple reasons.

I screwed up via my blood sugar testing & bolusing.

Me, the woman who's OCD when it comes to testing, decided to play bloodsugar.bolus roulette and lost!
Today's numbers had been great- actually, a bit on the low side - I'd been in the 80's (not the actual decade) all morning, and yesterday I didn't go above 142.

Most of the morning I was running around for work, but did manage a snack of peanut butter and banana with soy milk & didn't bolus for my snack.

By the time I was ready to eat lunch, I wasn't hungry, but was looking forward to some left over Greek salad with chicken. I was in a hurry and decided not to test, and bolused a unit.

Normally, I don't bolus for a Greek chicken salad, but since I'd eaten a big old banana and peanut butter 1.5 hours earlier, I thought I'd play it safe.

Cut to the past hour - I've been popping SweeTarts like crazy and have been unable to get my numbers above 64.

Lessons learned:
1. When in doubt, test - especially when your running low or high
2. 1 unit of insulin makes a BIG difference
3. Sometimes we win at Blood Sugar & or Bolus Roulette & sometimes we lose- but we always learn~

I was playing roulette last night and this morning - or at least that's what it feels like when Caleb's without DexCom. Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. I hope those sweet tarts are doing the trick (or by this time have done the trick).

I agree with Lorraine...once you're used to using a CGMS, when you're without it feels like roulette! Not to mention how lax I am on carb counting lately. David doesn't have any scales or measuring cups in his house...Need to get him some so I can count better while I'm staying with him!

Ugh! Yeah... I've had a few of those losses too. I felt high after over-correcting for a low, and decided to bolus for the "extra" amount of carbs I ate. I bolused, and then decided I should test. I was 136. And had just taken like 7 units of insulin. Genius. You are not the only one. Glad you are OK! :)

Oh it's one of those days Kel - you win some you lose some. You are awesome at this stuff, a little slip-up and all is not lost. I hate that damn roulette wheel by the way....

I agree with Scott. You are not alone my friend.

We do win some and we do lose some. The best thing to do is to test before dosing but you know what? We're human and don't on occasion! I hope by now your bg are behaving girlie.

I'm so glad that I read this earlier today because I almost did the same thing to my daughter. She didn't want to check before dinner. We had just been combating a low just an hour prior so I thought she was probably ok. I remembered your story and made her check and she was at 89. Too low to bolus for all of the carbs. Whew! Glad I checked. You were a life saver today Kelly!

Echo on the past posts about you not being alone. We all play, and often lose. Good luck on getting back into the swing of things, without resorting to cupcakes (unless, you know, they're just too tempting).
