Moretic, Moron Diabetic/PWD, WHATEVER. I Have A Major Case Of The Diabetes Stupids

4 times in 24 hours - And I think it might very well be a record in the adult category.

What am I talking about?? Changing my insulin pump infusion set, that's what!

The first time was early yesterday afternoon when I realized that my infusion set of three days wasn't absorbing the way it should be. That happens every now and then, so it was really no big deal. I changed it and continued on.
The second time happened late yesterday afternoon when I was running out the door and said infusion set looped around a doorknob and ripped out! Again, that's happened before and I went about the business of fixing my mishap
The third time was my really my fault, in my haste to put in a new infusion set and get on with my day, the sticky sticker part of the infusion set somehow folded over so that there was a hugeunsticky part (are you following me? ) that I knew would never stay stuck, so I had to start AGAIN.

Wait a second, that's the third and fourth time right there. HOLY GUACAMOLE, that means that 5 minutes ago when I got up from my desk and my tubing became tangled in my chair's armrest was actually the 5th time in 24 hours that I had to change my infusion set.
OK, it's official! just call me Molly Moretic The Moron Diabetic , or MORON, OR moron pwd/Diabetic WHATEVER. I'm having a MAJOR case of the Diabetes Stupids! And I feel terribly uncoordinated and extremely dumb right now.

Just tell me I'm not the only one whose ever had The Diabetes Stupids, PLEASE. With copious amounts of carbs on top!

Red Donut Rising...Or...A Carb Free Donut Is Not Necessarily A Good Thing

Red Donut Rising.........

This weekend turned out to be interesting on all fronts. Including diabetes.

It started Friday afternoon after I went to the Dermatologist's office to have some “Beauty Marks” looked at. After a complete body scan/ body map- I was told that my beauty marks were just that- but that I needed to come back in 6 months- and just in case I wasn’t already aware of this fact- I was incredibly full of freckles- even though I am a freak about sunscreen. Thanks Dr. – just want I wanted to hear…on all counts.

ON the positive- nothing needed to be removed- which was great, since I had plans to spend Saturday and in NYC and didn’t feel like going there with a face full of stitches.

Then I got a phone call from my friend who I supposed to be having dinner with.He and his significant other were sick (like in bed with fever sick) and were canceling.

I was OK with that. I still had plans to take the train and go to the American Diabetes EXPO at the Javitz Center. I was hopping to meet up with some DOC friends, maybe meet Charlie Kimball and see both his super cool car and tricked out juice helmet, and get all diabetes Diva-fied with the Divabetics.

MY train ticket was already booked and lets face it, a day in NYC is never a bad thing.

I tweeted about being in NYC contacted a few folks about going. I updated my new iphone with old DOC numbers from my old phone and new ones from email. For the peeps I hadn't contacted- I planned emailing them from the train.

Cut to 7:12 a.m.Saturday morning and me running down the steps. OK – I wasn’t running- I didn’t get the chance to. I literally air stepped (if there is such a move) off the first step and my legs flew up towards the sky, my wrist hit the railing and my butt slammed against the edge of the first, then the second steps. I saw stars.

When I got my baring straight I immediately noticed to things:

  1. I could move my arms and legs- which was a good thing.
  2. MY ASS WAS KILLING ME- which was not such a good thing.

I got up, with tears streaming down my face and walked slowly down the steps shaking like a leaf. I tried to get a feel for what had happened and what it meant. My left wrist was bleeding and if I had been a better frame of mind- I would have grabbed my monitor and tested- Why waste the blood?

I tried sitting and winced in pain- I stood up and tried sitting again- and felt a dull pain where my coxsix bone met my posterior and my legs felt like Jell-O. I knew I had to go to the Dr. I texted a few people in NYC, some got the texts, and some did not. Which meant in my rush to text them the news about my sore ass, I’d texted to the wrong numbers- which meant a complete stranger got the news of my bruised ego and ass- instead of Stacey from ACT 1.

As I was about to get in the car and drive to the ER, my neighbor (who was a nurse) saw me crying and walking like a duck. She asked me what happened and I told her. She shooed me in her house and said: You’ll be in the ER all day, let me take a look.

I weighed my choices.

Choice A: Me in the ER until sometime after lunch, (It was already close to 9) if I was lucky. I’d most likely leave with a large ER bill,an over priced donut ring, and maybe an RX for Tylenol 3, which I already possessed.

Choice B: Let my neighbor Lynne see my coccyx bone in all it’s glory and possibly prevent an excruciating long and drawn out visit to the ER.

I went with B and put my pride in my pocket and dropped my pants to my knees. No external bruising- which was good. Severe tenderness, slight swelling and redness. Lynne suggested I go buy a Donut Ring to sit on, ice for 20 minutes 4 to 6 times daily, lie on my stomach whenever possible, and walk when ever I could to keep the muscles stretched. I was also to avoid sitting and long car rides for at least 3 to 5 days- Yeah, no problem there Lynne!

Advil and or Tylenol were suggested to ease the aches and tenderness.

If I really felt the need to go see a Doc, she could recommend

several.

Actual Aeriel footage of Kelly's Carb Free Donut~

So I bought a “carb free donut” at Rite Aide that only came in one color: FIRE ENGINE RED. Yes, REALLY. Not the color for calm and soothing, and definitely not the color of being subtle and blending in. I paid for it and blew it up in the parking lot because at this point I had no shame and didn’t give a crap who saw me.

I iced, I took my Advil and by 1PM I was going STIR CRAZY from lying on my belly and watching mindless television on such a gorgeous day.

My friend Cathy picked me up and we went to a near by street fair, where we saw this guy standing around and I have to admit- he made me smile- and laugh- which really helped! And it also made my butt hurt so yeah- everything is connected!

Who you gonna call? Ass Busters!

My blood sugars ran slightly elevated Saturday evening ( which may have had to to with the chicken Gyro I ate at the fair) but were fine yesterday.

So what did I learn from all this?

1. The first step is indeed a doozy.

2. My Asno Redondo (my fine round ass) is not quite as round, or as cushioned, or as fine as I thought.

3. And having to have a carb free donut is not necessarily a good thing. I'll take an RX for a fully loaded carb-filled cupcake any day ~

WAy Back Wednesday - CAUSE... I'm A t1, Your A t1, She's a t1, He's a t1....

Well, it's way back Wednesday  and the following  was originally posted on December 27th, 2007.  Diabetesaliciousness was Just under two months old, and I was still learning the whole bloggity blog thing.

The following post  is based on the 1970's/ 80's Dr Pepper  commercial where the dude from An American Werewolf in London  sings: I drink Dr. Pepper cause I'm Proud
I used to be alone in a crowd...."

Anyway-  I gave it a diabetes spin- Hope you like it!!

SO, I was going over my whole Type 1 family history in my head the other day......

I'm a T1
MY Dad was a T1
My sister Donna is a T1
My sister Debbie was a T1 and died because of it
My Aunt Pat was a T1
My Aunt Jo-Anne was a T1 and died because of it
My cousin Bernadette is a T1
My cousin Denise is a T1 - I think
My Nephew Brendon is a T1
My mother's Grand Mother was a T1
My mother's uncle was a T2 - she thinks - he might have been T1 but for the life of her she can't remember because he died like 50 years ago.

I start humming the theme to the Dr. Pepper Commercial from the 1970's.
You know the one, where the dark haired guy is by himself and starts to sing: "

I drink Dr. Pepper cause I'm Proud
I used to be alone in a crowd
But now you look around these days
There seems to me a Dr. Pepper craze
CAUSE......
I'm a pepper,
Your a pepper,
He's a pepper,
She's a pepper,
Wouldn't you like to be a pepper to?
Be a pepper, drink Dr. Pepper, Be a Pepper, Drink Dr. Pepper.

Us peppers are an interesting breed
an original taste is what we need
Ask any Pepper and he'll say
Only Dr. Pepper tastes that way
CAUSE......
I'm a pepper,
Your a pepper,
He's a pepper,
She's a pepper,
Wouldn't you like to be a pepper to?
Be a pepper, drink Dr. Pepper, Be a Pepper, Drink Dr. Pepper.

COME ON!!"

At the end of the commercial he's dancing and singing with a whole crowd of "hopped up on the
Voo Doo Dr. Pepper" freaks.

NOT TO SELF: YOU WATCHED WAY TO MUCH TELEVISION AS A CHILD

immediately change the words to suite my family history.

I basal & bolus insulin accordingly don't ya know,
Cause if I didn't..... it would really blow
If my blood sugar is super high or super low
Two places I 'don't really want to go

One extreme I'd start to sweat and shake

The other could knock me out
And put me into a Diabetic Keto Acidotic state...

Cause, I'm part of Diabetic T1 family Craze!

OH......
I'm a T1,
Your a T1,
He's a T1,
She's a T1,
Wouldn't you like to be a T1 to?

Us T1's are an interesting breed....
New Islets of Langerhans are just what we need

Ask any T1 and she'll say
I'm waiting for a cure to come my way....
Cause...

I'm a T1,
Your a T1,
He's a T1,
She's a T1,
Wouldn't you like to be a T1 to?
Be a T1 - just like your Daddy..
Be a T1, my families DNA Double Helix is pretty batty

COME ON!

Diabetesaliciousness Performance Rider...It's An Industry Standard

So, Last month I got an email from Gary Scheiner of Integrated Diabetes, asking me to perform at his Pumpers Banquet, which celebrates the 50th meeting of Insulin Pump Club of Greater Philadelphia. Which by the way, is tonight at 7p.m.

I of course was completely flattered & excited, and of course said "Yes."

As long as Gary was willing to meet my "Diabetesaliciousness Performance Rider/list of demands." All serious entertainers such as myself have these Riders which is both a common practice and an industry standard.

I sent him my list and he was more than willing.

Here’s a copy of said Rider, do you think I went to far, or not far enough? IS there anything else I should demand in future Riders? Diabetesaliciousness minds want to know.....

*********************************************

In order to perform at The 5oth Meeting of the Insulin Pump Club of Greater Philadelphia, the following list of demands stated in my Performance Contract/Rider must be met:

1. A crystal bowl of green m & m's must be available to me back stage - Only Green m & m's as they are not only a tasty treat that keeps my blood sugar from dropping, but just as important, they bring out the color of my eyes.

2. Speaking of Green - No "dietetic” or “diabetic friendly” foods in the Green Room (Performers area off stage) of any kind."

3 The Help must refer to me as "Goddess," and are not allowed to look me directly in the eye at anytime. Such insubordinate behavior to what I like to refer to as my “Goddess Clause”, and any other infraction of my Rider is punishable by methods involving infusions sets and doorknobs!

4. Please note that If anyone asks or paraphrases the following questions to me at anytime:

" Are you allowed to eat that?"

"Are you sure your allowed to eat that?"

"You must have the beets real bad to be on an insulin pump."

I have the right to not only quadruple my performance fee, BUT also throw a severe temper tantrum, the likes of which will both shake your foundation to its very core AND make Naomi Campbell, Courtney Love, & Danny Bonnaducci outbreaks resemble” little girls, crying for their mamas."

5. Speaking of fees, mine is as always, negotiable.

6a. OF course, Gourmet food MUST BE PROVIDED to me and must be to my liking.
I also require copious & never ending amounts of Crys-tal Champagne & Cosmo martinis made with Chilled Kettle 1 Vodka, and served in chilled 10 ounce crystal glasses.

6b. These drinks should be "made to order" and available to me at all times, including but not limited to; before, during, and after said performance.

6c. 10 cases of Fuji Water (32 oz bottles) & one box of 100 count BENDY STRAWS must be provided as well.

6d. Transportation and lodging must be provided for me to and from the venue, and preferably in a stretch Hummer. All fees associated with travel must me covered!
**Please note that my Entourage requires all that is listed is rider point 6a,6b,6c, and 6d.

7. You must pay any and all fees associated with my Entourage, which includes my Hairdresser; Make-up Artist, Stylist, Acupuncturist, Fung Shui Practitioner, Yogi Guru, Astrologist, & Masseuse as they accompany me to all public and charity based events and are an essential part of my pre performance peace of mind & well being.

8. I Kelly Kunik, Super Diabetesaliciousness Genius and Diabetic Life Style Maven have the right to add to this Performance Rider whenever I see the need.

Where Do You Stash It???

Actual footage of Kelly's Insulin BDC and Nail Polish Bunker

So inquiring minds want to know (OK, I want to know), where do you store your insulin? Personally, (and for as long as I can remember,) I store my insulin in the Butter/Dairy compartment of my fridge - as did my father and sisters before me.

When I do my "Diabetes –Shtick, I ask this very question and almost everyone stores it in his or her butter/dairy area. Ironically, most aren’t really sure of the reason behind their proclivity towards the BDC Insulin Bunker. I actually came up with that myself!

Well Diabetesalcious readers, I want to know why. I mean is it because all of us secretly lust after butter & cheese? You know how some people only smoke when they drink? Well, I only eat butter when I drink!

After some semi serious thought, I've come to the conclusion that the butter/diary compartment (A.k.a - BDC Insulin Bunker) is a diabetic's version of a jewelry display case. Visually, it allows us to view the precious contents, while keeping a running tally of our insulin (and nail polish – it’s a chick thing) while protecting our precious bottles under its glass like shield.

A "Diabetesalicious " dome which defends the priceless (yet oh so delicate) insulin bottles against the Dark Arts of the fridge. Like last nights Thai take out, this evenings marinated portabellas, and tomorrows Pb & J.

Keeping said insulin bottles a safe distance away from suspicious condiments with exotic names like rice wine vinegar; anchovy paste, Heintz 57, and my absolute favorite, Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce.

"God I'm hungry!"

So darlings, where do you keep your i- stash, in a BDC Insulin Bunker, a drawer, a shelf?

ANd why?

Diabetes Theme Songs - REVISITED With dblogville's Help

Normally - I try not to recycle posts, but I'm prepping for some gigs (more on that to follow) and I'm trying to get my music queued. Back in November, when my blog was new and my knowledge of dBlogville was low, I wrote a post (for the very same reason) and called it "Diabetes Theme Songs." Well, I'm still on the quest for Diabetes Theme Songs and music for my gigs.
Personally, I'm a big fan of "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "Candy Girl" and have used them before to open and close with. Any other musical suggestions from the folks in dBlogville?

Diabetesaliciousness minds want to know!

1. Candy Girl - New Addition
2. Sugar, Ahhh honey, honey - The Archies

"CRAPTACULAR, CRAPTACULAR!!!!!"

I love Pizza, I know most of us do. But....THIS is disgusting!

This craptacular pizza creation is the real deal, and is served in various Pizza Hut's throughout Japan. Pizza Hut Japan's exclusive Double Roll pie is a crazy 646 calories per slice! Minuscule bacon wrapped sausages (hot dogs) do a line dance across the crust, and mini hamburger patties sit on top of a pile of mushrooms, soy beans, corn, paprika, garlic chips, green peppers, and pepperoni.
Behold the power of cheese....as in mozzarella, cheddar and parmigiana ensconcing the pizza in a cheesyfied wrap.
Let's not forget for even one second that the pie comes with sides of both ketchup and maple syrup for extra flavor, and is recommended for the kiddies to slather on their slice!

Other Calorie Info from Pizza Hut
A medium pizza is 1943 calories and a large is 2809 calories.

So regarding Diabetes Math:

How much insulin do you think you'd have to bolus for this?

Would you use a square or duel wave????

How many grams of fat for one serving?

And for how many days would one be running to bathroom after dining on said "mess of a pizza?"

Personally, It really just grosses me out to think about it. I have no desire to try this "craptacular" creation. Blood Sugar Nirvana would be difficult to achieve, not to mention any and all gastrointestinal issues one would certainly have after ingesting such a monstrosity!

Thoughts????

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN....THE DIABETES CIRCUS PROUDLY PRESENTS THE BALANCING ACT OF A DIABETIC'S LIFE........"

Painting by Marc Chagall

After my last post where I blamed Scotty J for my wild blood sugar ride, BetterCell and I had a dialogue and we both came to the exact same conclusion in the reader comments section of said post.

We both feel that Living with Diabetes is like living life under the big top. It's a balancing act, a 3 Ring Circus whose acts continue to change, amaze, and challenge us on a daily basis.

With that being said; yours truly began to imagine the following D-Circus Maximus in vivid detail.

Imagine if you will, a pancreas shaped tent where the Greatest Show on earth, "The Balancing Act of A Diabetics Life" takes place. listen as the Ring Master explains my act with "Candy Girl" and "Pour Some Sugar on Me" alternately accompanying the various diabetic feats.

IT'S SHOWTIME!
(and for the sake of time & space in d-blogville, it's is a one-woman show)

"Ladies and Gentlemen, the Diabetes Circus Balancing Act of a Diabetics Life, Proudly Presents,

The Amazing Miss Kelly K, T1 for 30 years and and LIVING a KICK-ASS LIFE!

Watch as she CONSTANTLY jumps through Rings of Fire to OWN her Blood Sugars on a daily basis!

See her bravely (Stupidly?) pricking her finger with just a single lancet-sans Pen, & checks her blood sugar. Watch in AMAZEMENT as she CALCULATES DIABETES MATH, counts her carbs, takes her blood sugar, and correctly boluses for every meal she eats!

Pulling it all together to reach BLOOD SUGAR NIRVANA!

OBSERVE as she CORRECTLY ESTIMATES how many carbs in a 1/2 cup serving of Ben and Jerry's Vanilla ice cream ( 18grams,) a small apple ( 15 grams - 4 grams of fiber = 11 grams,) and a 1 Cup serving of Lowfat Silk Vanilla Soy milk (10grams -1 gram of fiber = 9grams of carb)

Watch in ASTONISHMENT as she PRECISELY identifies which spinning plate has the correct two ounce service of cooked pasta !!!!! A tricky feat that could screw up Blood Sugar Nirvana in an instant if not properly identified and bolused for.

Prepare to be DUMBFOUNDED by her DEXTERITY as she & her pump tubing DEFY & DANCE around DOORKNOBS, EDGES and LEDGES - Most of the time.

Be AMAZED as she not only changes her infusion set in the blink of an eye, but rotates the location as well. ALL IN UNDER 30 SECONDS. Now you see it, now you don't!

Watch her as she NAVIGATES on the Tightrope of life, handling a low blood sugar at work and still maintains her dignity.

Listen and learn as she CONTINUALLY EDUCATES herself on all the latest and greatest Diabetes breakthroughs, studies, and technical accouterments that hit the Diabetes market on a daily basis.

Join her as she WORKS IT ALL OUT, before her actual workout.
Taking her blood sugar; figuring out her temporary basal rate, and MAGICALLY concealing a Lara Bar; B.S. machine, emergency $5, and house keys on her person - And still manages not to look like a bag lady.

Listen in AWE as she handles PEOPLES STUPID QUESTIONS AND STATEMENTS regarding diabetes & Take bets on whether or not she will keep calm and educate the person on the difference between t1 and t2, or if she'll loose her cool entirely and verbally annihilates them with her sardonic wit. "

It's a job, it's an adventure, it's a pain in the ass, and it is OUR life.

Calling all Midvale Alum

OK - favorite"Far Side" pic ever!

Reminds of me of this life of mine at times. While I'm an excellent dancer when the music is on, I'm a bit clumsy in real life...on occasion. Sometimes the blatantly obvious, is not so very for those of us who are Midvale alum.

For instance.....I've actually put my my pump battery in backwards and then wondered why "the damn thing wouldn't work!"

I've walked into, and almost through a screen door - with coffee in hand. No damage to the screen, but I ended up wearing my coffee.

I've put my test strip in the machine upside down and then wondered where the area was to place my drop of blood.

Once, in High School when I was deep in conversation with my 3 best buds, I actually walked smack into Stop sign because I was enthralled over my friends latest escapades, I looked at them instead of looking ahead. I don't know which hurt more, my head or my pride.

I used to give my insulin
shots through my clothes to save time - and to secretly impress my friends. Of course, only when I was wearing white or some other light color, would a drop of blood decide to appear. Ironically it never once happened when I was wearing black, purple, or blue.

We all know about pump tubing and doorknobs. It's a global issue, nuff said.

I won't even tell you how I broke my arm a few years ago. Let's just say it involved preventing
a cordless phone from falling down a flight of 16 steps - by blocking its descent at the top of the stairs,
I inadvertently caused myself to fall and ended up at the bottom.

We all push when we should pull at times, but we learn and move forward just the same.
It's very similar to dealing with our Diabetes. Just when we think we know it all about this disease, it throws us curve ball or two, forcing us to learn yet another set of rules regarding the Big D.
And we do, because we can....And because we must.
