HOLD MY CARROTS

Taste the rainbow and diabetes bitchswitch, flipped.
don’t know why some people are obsessed with carrots and diabetes - but get a fucking clue, learn the facts about diabetes, and leave carrots alone - and leave me alone when I eat or buy them - because I LOVE CARROTS.
This happened right before Christmas.
#####
I stood there in the veggie aisle, enthralled by the display of 2 lb bags of large and organic rainbow carrots - guys, they were seriously gorgeous, dare I say stunning?
A literal rainbow of colors - purple, orange, beige - and I couldn’t wait to embrace the rainbow of carrots, chop them up and get them in my belly!
Bonus, they were only 50 cents more than the freakish large and weirdly uniform looking Frankenstein carrots  - and I knew they were tastier, because no chemicals.

I’d planned on making an amazing carrot ginger soup I’d recently perfected when I got home, these carrots would be perfect. I grabbed two, 2 lb bags and walked towards the produce scale a few feet away.
Side bar: Bagged produce doesn’t always weigh the same, so take a beat and weigh them.
In this case, one bag weighed a 1/2 a pound more than the other - and that would be the one I placed in my cart with the other ingredients.
As I turned to put the other bag of carrots back, I heard someone say, “You’ll get diabetes if you eat all those carrots.”
I looked over towards the apple bins and saw a woman standing in that aisle and with what seemed to be an inordinate amount of kale in her basket, but that's besides the point.
She stood catty-corner to the isle, looking at me and shaking her head.
I silently uttered ”fuck,” looked at her and said, “I don’t know anyone who eats two pounds of carrots at once and that’s not how diabetes works."
Then I did my best to extricate myself from the lecture I knew was headed my way.
It was like the baby carrot bbq incident of 2011 all over again - but different.

Nine times out of ten, I try and educate about diabetes every chance I get - that's what most of us do. But not this time.

This time - on a rainy and damn near freezing night, all I wanted to do was get home, put on my PJs and create the fabulous carrot ginger soup I’d been craving and which ironically, always seemed to be followed by post meal unicorn blood sugars, every time I made it.
Which when you think about it makes perfect sense because It’s all veggies - it’s like drinking a liquid warm salad, except that sounds gross and this soup is anything but!

I started wheeling my cart back towards the carrot wall, but Apple Annie followed my over.

Apple Annie: Carrots are loaded with sugar - they're like donuts.
Me: Ginger Donut soup doesn’t sound like it would be appetizing.
Apple Annie: Carrots are loaded with sugar - they do more harm than good and mess with your insulin levels.

And in my head, I panned left to the imaginary camera and said: HOLD MY CARROTS.

In real time and standing in front of the rainbow of veggies, I stepped on my diabetes soapbox and stated: I already have diabetes - I’ve had diabetes since I was a little girl - and not because my mom fed me carrots... or donuts... or donuts laced with carrots
I have diabetes because my pancreas crapped out and destroyed the part of my pancreas that makes insulin - STOP BLAMING PEOPLE WITH DIABETES AND STOP BLAMING CARROTS.

And instead of putting the second bag of rainbow carrots back, I tossed them in my cart in defiance and walked past her.
And Apple Annie just stared at me like I had three-heads, all of which were happily munching away on rainbow carrots.

Don't BullSh*t Me Or My Insulin Pump, Mr. TSA Man At San Diego Airport!

Saturday morning came to soon for me as I my taxi made it’s way from The Hard Rock Hotel To San Diego’s Airport. It had been an amazing and jam packed three days at The 2011 Roche Social Media Summit and I didn’t want to leave.

Plus, I was tired, and the very thought of an almost 6 hour flight made me queasy - As did the thought of traveling with diabetes & previous TSA encounters.

I checked my bags and received my boarding pass at curbside check-in, and then I dragged my feet and carry-on over to security and mentally tried to prepare myself for the whole insulin pump TSA interrogation that would most certainly occur.

Just one day earlier on Friday, as the Roche Social Media Summit was in it’s last hour, I re-tweeted the following tweet:

@diabetesalic SHAMEFUL RT @hrana Elderly woman asked 2remove adult diaper during #TSA search bit.ly/lufLsr - Absolutely unacceptable behavior by TSA

The story of that poor woman, whose only crimes were her advanced age & declining health had me sick to my stomach. It made me think about my mother's fragile health and my own “insulin pump/TSA issues.”

And it made me angry! As I stood in line preparing myself mentally to be interrogated, it was that poor woman I was thinking of.

I was surprised how quick my turn came up and I put my shoes, laptop, carry-on, etc .in bins & then onto a conveyor belt. Then I walked through the security gate thing, and was immediately pulled over.

TSA Dude: IS that an insulin pump

Me: Yes it is.

TSA Dude: Well, you know I’m going to have to get a female security to give you a pat-down.

Me: Um, no you’re not. My pump (a 512 medtronic minimed - yes, you read right, a 512- YES, I suffer from Insulin Pump Purchase Anxiety ) has no metal parts so there’s no reason for a pat down. And even if it did have metal parts, it's still ridiculous & goes against my civil rights under the American With Disabilities Act.

Feel free to swab the pump and my hands, like they do at every other airport in the country, but you’re not patting me down.

TSA Dude then began to have a series of powwows with 3 different TSA employees regarding the best way to handle my insulin- pump contraband.

TSA Dude: Well...... You can have the female security pat you down.....or you can walk through the full body scanner.

Me: She's not patting me down and I’m not walking through the full metal body scanner.

  1. If it damages my pump in anyway - I’m screwed.
  2. I don’t need to give a free peep show. If you’re going to see all my lucky charms - so to speak, then you can buy me dinner first!

TSA Dude: You can’t see anything. FYI, he sounded both annoyed & hurt at that accusation.

Me: Yeah, actually you can.

God, I only wish I’d read THIS article before our exchange, because then I could have mentioned TSA Dude's co-worker’s unfortunate genitalia size and the fact that yes, you can indeed see EVERYTHING.

Then TSA Dude had me go over to the side, and then TSA Dude proceeded to swab my hands & my insulin pump, and then he told me I could retrieve my things.

Me: So, we’re done, then?

TSA Dude: Yeah, it’s just next time you should really just go through the full body scanner - It's easier for everyone.

Me: It's not easier for me!

At that point, I could either continue arguing my point & continue to prove him wrong, (but as far as I was concerned, I'd won) or I could get my things and grab a much needed cup of coffee.

I walked away and started to retrieve my things from the conveyor belt - Then, I noticed the woman who had been behind me in line had been pulled aside for her medical device. This woman, a breast cancer survivor who no longer had any lymph-nodes on her right side, was wearing a compression device so her arm wouldn’t swell up.

This was apparently the first time she’d ever experienced the TSA welcome wagon & she was scared & annoyed.

I heard her say to the TSA Chick: Look, I’m not going through the full body scanner with this and you’re not patting me down.

I’m going to assume that there was no metal parts, because TSA Chick ended up swabbing the device & the woman it was attached to.

When Survivor Woman’s ordeal was done, she and I looked at one another as we put our shoes on and said: You deal with this every time you travel?

Me: Yep, 9 times out of 10 - And it’s bullshit! My guy didn’t even know the rules and he was literally making them up as he was going along!

Survivor Woman: They have to figure this out!

Me: Agreed & no shit - This is ridiculous! I’m all for safety, but I’m also for respecting the person who medically needs assistance. Making an elderly woman remove her diaper & giving those of us with medical devices so much crap is WRONG.

Seriously TSA, if you want your jobs to be easier, respect the people who you are both protecting and interrogating - We are one in the same after all! And for god-sakes TSA, know the rules of engagement!

Because I Like Carrots, THAT'S WHY!

Much like the monxter dude above, I ate the rainbow on my plate & it was delicious!

So I was at a friend’s bbq a few weeks ago, and before the official meat feast began, I was enjoying the crudites, otherwise known as the veggie & dip platters.

I’ve been trying to up my veggie servings as of late, and let’s face it, the veggie trays at the bbq made it more than easy to do that.

My plate looked like a veggie rainbow, filled with raw yellow and orange sweet peppers, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, sugar-snap peas, celery, and baby carrots all nicely arranged.
And I had a feeling that my CDEs would be pleased!

I scooped a few spoonfuls of hummus & tzatziki
on my plate and was just about to grab a seat and indulge, when a Friend Of A Friend (who shall now be referred to as FOAF for the rest of the post) came up to me and said:

FOAF: Hey, don’t you have diabetes?
Me: Yes, I do.
FOAF: Well, then why are you eating carrots?
Me: Because I LIKE carrots, that's why. Why are YOU eating carrots?
FOAF: Well, I’m allowed to eat carrots. You do know they're loaded with sugar, right?
Me: I’m going to go out on a limb here and fill you in on a few things.
A. I count carbs, not sugar grams. B. Whatever sugar i.e carbs these carrots may have, the fiber, vitamins & tasty deliciousness are worth it. And C. I REALLY LIKE RAW BABY CARROTS.

FOAF: Well, I just wanted to make sure THAT you knew about the carrots. After all, I’d hate for you to run into a problem.

Me: Thanks, but I got it covered.

FOAF walked away, looking perplexed and annoyed. FOAF also spent the next few hours looking over at my plate every now and then, but tried to look like she wasn’t.

And FOAF damn near had a conniption when I placed homemade brownie on my plate!

But I ignored FOAF for the rest of the bbq and I thoroughly enjoyed my raw veggies, my bun-less turkey cheeseburger & homemade brownie.

I hung out with my friends and totally ignored the FOAF elephant in the room.
I just didn’t feel like defending myself over freaking carrots!

Nor did I feel like verbally annihilating her and carving her a new one so to speak. And I didn't I flip my Diabetes Bitch Switch (Yes, SHOCKING,I know) I just let it go.

FYI: My blood sugars for the rest of the evening were 150, 137 & 133.

SO Yeah, I ate a veggie rainbow - WITH CARROTS - AND A BROWNIE - And lived to tell about it!

Things That Make Me Go "Hmmmmmm," Damn Near End Of Summer Edition

Things that make me go HMMMMMM, damn near end of summer edition.
Those that read my blog, know that lots of things in this world make me go "HMMMMM."
Some are diabetes related and some are not, but all leave me scratching my head!

For the life of me, I don't understand why I'm bombarded with twitter followers who pitch weight loss via hypnosis, lap-band surgery, and raw food diets. Here's a thought: GET A CLUE! Just because I have diabetes doesn't mean that I'm over weight, need to have major surgery, or believe that eating raw foods 24 X7will cure me. Seriously, STOP STALKING ME!

Why is that when I'm just about to embrace REM sleep and drift off to la-la land, a low blood sugar decides to rear its ugly head?? And why do I wait a few minutes hoping that it's something else entirely?

Why does Glen Beck use a blackboard?

I find it ironical and extremely annoying that when I'm supposed to fast at midnight for blood work, I have an almost uncontrollable urge to graze at precisely 12:01 a.m. What's with that?

I also find it "ironical" that the Corn Refiners Association feels that the American people are "confused" about High Fructose Corn Syrup. We aren't confused, THEY ARE.

What's the deal with Kim Kardashian & Justin Beiber and why do I even care?

Why does the instructions on shampoo bottles almost always tell us to: Wash, rinse, & repeat?

Why do people tell me (us) "I look good, especially for having diabetes." REALLY?! It's not like I tell them that "they look good, especially for being a stupid moron."
BOTTOM LINE: I look good because of good lighting, a flattering lipstick shade and a sparkling (if not sardonic) personality.

I have absolutely now idea "How much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood." And what the hell is a woodchuck anyway?
OK, I just googled the above and apparently a woodchuck is another name for the North American groundhog. And for the record, woodchucks can't "chuck" wood. But if a woodchuck could chuck wood, it's been estimated that the amount of wood chucked would be damn close to 700 lbs. Say that three times fast!

HFCS - The Sweet Facts Are: We Aren't Confused - YOU ARE.

I’m confused about lots of things in life. I don’t get why people watch the Kardashians or the Jersey Shore and am “confused” as to what the attraction is to shows like that?

The concept of North, South, East, & West confuses me - and if truth be told it confuses various family members as well. In my diabetesalicious my mind, Canada is UP and Florida is down.

I understand the whole “clean up after yourself,” concept, and have understood it since nursery school. Simply put; if you make a mess, clean it up. I’m “confused” as to why BP Oil has such a tough time grasping said concept.

One thing that does not “confuse” me is High Fructose Corn Syrups negative effect on my blood sugar. I’ve done the “Diabetes Math” folks. I’ve counted the carbs, tested my blood sugar, and did the correct bolus for a snack size bag of corn chips/cookies, and was incredibly confused as my blood sugar skyrocketed to the moon.

I’ve called my CDE damn in tears, frustrated with the results of carbo counting for HFCS laden foods and was told quite bluntly: If HFCS is in the first five ingredients of a product, don’t eat it- it will wreck havoc with your blood sugars!

That was 10 years ago, and since then I’ve steered clear of the dietary demon that is HFCS.

I’ve read books, talked with numerous health care professionals, and watched documentaries on the HFCS, - it's not a pretty picture. I’ve written numerous blog posts about HFCS and tweeted facts. Seriously folks, there’s nothing “sweet” about what HFCS does to your body.

I w as mega confused when I start receiving out of the blue tweets from @Sweetfacts (a PR firm for the Corn Refiners Association) telling me that “I’m confused about HFCS” and that’s “it’s perfectly fine if consumed in moderation.” @sweetfacts also sent me lots of links to posts saying HFCS has nothing to does with the rise of type 2 diabetes in this country. YES – I laughed so hard I could barely catch my breath.

I tweeted back the correlation between HFCS being added to soft drinks in 1980, which happened to be the year children started being diagnosed with type 2. No answer on that one.

@sweetfacts @sstrumello FYI - US rates of type 2 diabetes at a crazy rate since 1980, when soda co's started substituting sugar with HFCS

I decided to tweet @Sweetfacts a rather simple question that would ease my mind regarding HFCS. I even used @Sweetfacts very own words. I asked: How does one consume HFCS in moderation when it’s in almost every processed food under the sun?

I asked this question multiple times and in multiple ways and tweeted a few other HFCS facts as we:

@sweetfacts I am confused though, because I have absolutely no idea how one consumes #HFCS in moderation - do tell!

@sweetfacts So tell please tell me because I'd love 2know how you do it. How does 1 consume #HFCS in "moderation,"since it's in everything

@sweetfacts SERIOUSLY? There's no confusion here-HFCS is NOT "a health food" in anyway, shape, or form. it's a genetically modified sweetener

@Sweetfacts FYI,I absolutely support farmers&buy fresh corn@ a wkly farmers mkt. The edible kind, not the yellow dent #7-spawner of HFCS kind

@sweetfacts Here's a question for you. Since #HFCS is in virtually EVERYTHING, how can it be consumed in moderation?

Of course I didn’t receive an answer – and there’s a good chance I won’t.

I also became royally confused when @KSGrains – another tweeter paid to tweet poetic about HFCS tweeted me this:

: @ksgrains @diabetesalic Saying #hfcs is in everything is totally misguided. Best way to eat healthy: http://bit.ly/HR7Bi

Yes, girlfriend sent me a link to the food pyramid - PLEASE!

So I tweeted:

@ksgrains Don’t tell me the "best way 2eat healthy,” I’ve been a type1diabetic since I ws 8& have been working w/nutritionists &CDES for years

@ksgrains Both personally&professionally. The nutritionists & Certified Diabetes Educators I work w/tell their patients to stay clear of #HFCS

@diabetesalic Exaggerate much? lol I think you need a good laugh -- What would Julia say about sweeteners? http://bit.ly/dyz4aH

My response:

@ksgrains NO,I tell it like it is. Julia Child ws a proponent of real food& ingredients& I’m sure she thought #HFCS ws BS.

Ironically, the producers of with the Julia Child wanna-be video and the site it airs on Sweetscam.com are rumored to be funded by those who make money from #HFCS.

I could cut and paste more tweets, but I’d rather just tell you how I feel.

I found the whole exchange and condescending attitude of both @ksgrains & @Sweetfacts to be really offensive.

I find it offensive that people who are paid by the corn conglomerate tell me and others like myself that we are confused about #HFCS.

As a person with type 1 diabetes for over 30 years, I don’t have the luxury of being “confused” when it comes to what I put in my body. My world revolves around all types of numbers.

Blood sugar numbers; carbs, fiber, fat grams and caloric intake. Not to mention A1C, blood pressure rates, kidney function rates, and cholesterol. I could go on, but you all know the diabetes drill.

I (like millions of others) MUST calculate the numbers for every piece of food I put in my body. I, like my diabetes cohorts, MUST test my blood sugar, and figure out (with the help of my bolus wizard the precise amount of insulin needed to cover every piece of food that goes into my body.

I have no choice but to test my blood sugar at least ten times a day if I want to live a great life with diabetes.

I’ve experienced first hand what a processed food product loaded with HFCS does to my body, verses it’s raw sugar counterpart. I have the numbers to back it up – DON’T YOU DARE TELL ME I’M CONFUSED.

Don’t send me to sites with “quirky” videos produced by the people who pay you to talk nice about them,

I’m offended & disgusted that @sweetfacts and @ksgrains have so little faith in my intelligence as both a consumer and as a person with diabetes.

Please guys, tell me how you feel about #HFCS – and tell them to!

And don’t even get me started on the Chiropractor on twitter who suggests pooping 3 times a day to help control your diabetes – he’s full of shit!

But I digress, and will leave that subject for another post!

Internal Diabetes BullSh*t Filter Switch Is Flipped

I couldn't sleep after last nights twitter cage match with Dr. "Shit For Brains, Diabetes Bible Cure" @Doncolbert . I was enraged. Apparently, he didn't agree with my post/assessment of his snake oil Bible Cure book.
I was on the road all day today and am just getting back on the Twitter/Blog track.
